The Nook Cafe

The Nook Cafe was a pocket-sized cafe in the heart of Mulberry Lofts in downtown Hagerstown, MD. It was a cranny, a community and a refuge for the thirsty, the hungry and the moody. It was a local coffee house where book enthusiasts and local artists who craved artisanal drink could unwind.

Origin teamed up with architect firm Design Method Group and Copy & Convo to create an experience that answered the call to morning blues and afternoon slumps.

Room for Everyone

From the brand identity to the environmental details, we wanted to create a space that reflected the owner’s core values – community, inclusitivioty and creativity. They wanted to create an atmosphere that was welcoming and disarming. Approachable but inspiring. Our creative efforts fused to create many memorable experiences for their customers.

We introduced the Nook Shelf: the perfect pairing with a hot beverage in hand. Customers could leave a book and take a book, sifting through donated classics and new reads alike. The Loyalty Card: a punch card that was also styled as a library card where the Barista would log drinks and could get to know his customer’s favorites. The Decaf Lounge: a quiet space through the hall which had windows to the in-house roaster, so friends could watch how their coffee was made while enjoying local art and tables for working or gathering. The Lounge also transformed to accommodate book clubs, fantasy sports drafts, open book and open mic nights and small company galas.

Eat, Drink & Be Moody

Perhaps the most important aspect of The Nook was the tagline that embodied it. Eat, Drink & Be Moody was a mindset. When did coffee become so complicated? When did ordering a drink require a second language? The Nook went back to the basics, keeping things unpretentious so people felt comfortable asking “What’s the difference between a macchiato and a latte?”

Whether you frequented The Nook, or was just passing through; was hangry for some lunch or killing time before work – everyone was welcome to come as they are and Eat, Drink & Be Moody.
